School news….

WebQuest screencap
A little too patriotic looking for me, but I’m still happy with it.

Well, I’m now halfway through my master’s degree. Six classes more to go and I’ll be done. My most recent class was pretty interesting. It was a class on curriculum design, and during the class, we looked at different (broader) views and definitions of curriculum.

John Bender – Plaster Falling

John Bender - Plaster Falling
Sealed in latex for your protection.

This post represents the first installment of old out-of-print vinyl-to-mp3 downloads being put online. I figured that I would start with John Bender, because back when I had my list of mp3s online, he was one of the most requested artist.

And who blames people for asking! The records have long been out of print and are fetching stupid prices that go well above $200 for a copy. I do sort of keep my eyes open for whether it has been reissued or not, but at the moment, it doesn’t seem like it, so I’m thinking of starting a series of postings which will put some of my out-of-print collection online (that which I have with me, of course—I left most of it behind in the States)

This record is overall a pretty cool early electronic record. I don’t know if John Bender actually influenced any current electronic artists, but you can certainly hear that he was doing some pretty cool stuff in the late 1970s and early 1980s that still sort of stands up well today….

These recordings were taken from vinyl and went straight to my HiMD recorder in the high-quality setting. I didn’t bother split up the tracks, but if you go to my Vinyl to HiMD collection and view Disc 7, you can get an the track listing and a small version of the cover.

Anyway, here are the downloads:

Madurai

Temple exterior
Just one of the many temple shots you can find in the Madurai photo gallery

Last weekend, Amy and I accompanied the CMF interns to Madurai. We got a chance to visit a microfinance institution (MFI) and a non-gonvernmental organization (NGO) that works with self-help groups (SHG). How’s that for a slew of acronyms?

Madurai seemed like a pretty nice place, although we were only there for a very short time. I’m not sure how much smaller it is than Chennai, but it felt smaller while still having stuff to do. The main attractions there are the temples and the one we visited was pretty impressive—but check out the photos yourself.

Anniversaries

A little over nine years ago, Amy gave me a kiss on my neck while I was saying goodbye to her on the front porch at 729 De La Vina street after our first date. I wanted to kiss her back, but my body reacted by running away quickly—but not nearly as quickly as my heart was racing….

And now, we’re here in India, well-established in the most recent stage of our adventures together… Adventures that have taken us throughout Asia and across many of the American states…. Adventures which remind me every day why I’ve been so lucky to have Amy by my side over these years….

The path towards getting there from here

The Path Towards Getting There From Here is a DWAB song off of the A Very Well-Calculated Lack of Cohesion CD. Amy took this photo of me while I was on the “Toy Train” to Ooty, and I thought that I would have some fun with my Photoshop plugins and make a silly video of myself….

Singapore… and then no more….

Singapore Airport sunflower garden

Well, my silly moving around is almost over…. I’m currently in front of a free internet kiosk killing time in the Singapore airport. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi is not free, so I can’t use my own computer, which would have been ideal, but this seems to be fine anyway….

2657 Re-designed

Hyacinth in the cabinet
Hyacinth feels at home anywhere, even on the website…

So, I was sitting around the other day, and I decided that it was about time that I re-worked the 2657 Productions site. I had already stripped out all the html tags from the old site and had these bare pages waiting for some styles and pictures to be added to them.

I’ve been in CA for the last few days, and for the most part, I’ve just been hanging out at home at 2657, so it seemed like an appropriate time to give myself an intensive weekend project and actually go through with the site redesign. I think that this is officially the third true version of the site, but I would have to re-check before I say that’s a fact.

Chillin’ in Thailand

… in some nice steamy weather….

Golden Budha

As with my flight over to India, I had a rediculous layover in Bangkok again. It turns out that the layover was ok though—I got a chance to work on some of my upcoming papers so maybe my time in CA will be a little bit less hectic….

So, this time around, the hotel gave me a free 6-hour “temple and factory” tour. The temple part was fine, although I had been to all of them already. Prices were more expensive than I remember, but that was years ago, so I wouldn’t be surprised. They were still much cheaper than the “dual price” scheme that is going on in India and that supposedly will change sometime…. The factory part was not so much fun—basically a tour of gemstone factories and jewelry shops and furniture stores and tailors—a little bit of everything. The tour guide was really nice though—she basically said that she just had to take me as part of her requirement with the tour company and she seemed more than happy to let me walk in, collect the little piece of paper she needed to, and walk out and go somewhere else. We ended up going with the driver to get some lunch and coffee which was much more fun than having people bug me every 30 seconds suggesting some other relative that I could buy something for…. “How about your uncle?” “How about your brother?” You get the idea….

Anyway, I just had a few minutes, wanted to get online for a minute…. And I’ll be back in the CA after a nice short flight across the Pacific. Woo hoo!!!

March was a slow month….

March was a slow month, except when it wasn’t…. Which was most of the time by the way. And it still hasn’t really let up throughout this month, hence the lack of updates to this site. I know, it’s not a great excuse, but it’s the only one that I have at the moment.

Life has more or less settled into a steady rhythm, and just as suddenly as it has done so, I’m getting ready to head back for a speedy two weeks in CA full of random traveling between LA, SB, and SF….

Ooty…. Ooh! Tea!

In February, a bunch of the research associates from the Centre for Micro Finance Research piled into trains to slowly make their way to Ooty to behold the scenic lands, get away from the hectic life of research, and generally have something to write about…. This video was made mostly using Picasa’s video option, though I had to use Vegas to add the sound. These photos are from the very slow “Toy Train” ride that we took for the last 6 hours of our 17 hour or so journey….

The “Toy Train” takes 6 hours to go about 40 kilometers (25 miles) and crawls its way up a steep mountain. Along the way you get to see lots of scenic meandering flowing creeks and tea-plantations scaling the mountain slopes. The train is super old-fashioned (I guess because of the old-school tracks) and spews out all this super black soot any time that it starts to struggle. Unfortunately, there were people who were guarding the roof access, and we weren’t even able to open the doors in our train car to sit outside…. Maybe some other time.

There is a photo gallery too.
