I was flipping through some of the old books that I used to scribble in way back when, and I came across a page that had the following:

This was a little idea that I had long before So, sue me already, back when I loved making mix-tapes for my friends. This mix-tape never materialized, and since then, my music exposure has increased quite a bit, leading to what I think is a pretty damn impressive compilation….

Overall, it wasn’t very systematically done. I mostly tried to go as far as I could without reaching any dead ends. But, even with that goal, I am sure I could have gone further–I think there have been some more covers of Julee Cruise and I’m sure she’s also covered others. Pretty much the only rules I had was that I shouldn’t repeat songs in more than one pair and I shouldn’t repeat a cover(ed) band. Without those rules, The Beatles alone would have resulted in a ridiculous spiral of cover songs.

Slug: Swingers, EPs, and more

I don’t actually remember how I got to know about Slug, but I liked their, um, sluggish loud music. I think it had something to do with them using lots of bass guitars, and because “Swingers” was a 10″, and I really liked to collect 10″ records….

Here’s the “Swingers” 10″, a few 7″ singles, and a truly sluggish track called “Crawl” for your enjoyment.

Reality Control? – Children of Terra

A couple of years ago (yes, years) I posted two Reality Control? compilations. Most people who know anything about Reality Control? know about the label that was run by John Lyons (by the way John, belated happy birthday!) but I’m not sure that too many know that there was also a band called Reality Control? and yes, John was in it for a while. (It was also the name of John’s super cool zine that he should digitize and post online–I can’t do it from here in India unless he wants to send me old copies of all of them….)

Anyway, I was looking through some of my old MiniDiscs and copying some of the music on there and came across this oddity: a Reality Control? tape titled “Children of Terra.” I don’t have the actual tape with me, so unfortunately I cannot tell you who was on this tape (I know John was not) nor can I tell you what the song titles are. If anyone else has this tape, maybe they can pass the information on.

Excerpts from the 1990s

I don’t know what much I can say about David Hanna. As I mentioned on the page I created for him at So, sue me already, he would be one person I would love to have in a DWAB live band if there ever were one….

I remember David had moved away after recording the songs for One Final Episode in Our Attempts at Persistence 10″ and during the time he was gone, he took a course in music recording. When he came back to Santa Barbara for a short visit, he also lent me a tape with some of the stuff he had been doing.

It’s a pretty cool collection of random “songs” (they’re not really songs–they’re quite often more like “snippets” or samples that you could imagine layering to create some actual songs). I didn’t get any titles from him (I doubt he had any), so it’s somewhat tough to tell you my favorite songs, but be sure to scan through all of them and find the advertisement for “Liqui Socks”–it’s pretty damn cool….

You Want to Rock?

I can’t think of a better way to rock than to put on some Sleeping Body and listen to the slamming crunchy chaos that ensues.

I don’t actually remember how I got into Sleeping Body. I think it was just that their 7″ was on Vermin Scum, and I thought I would try it out. That and they were on a flexi compilation that I had, and the song on there was pretty good. And that’s what you get here in the Logogram + 1 download: four songs from the Logogram 7″ and one from the Four Bands I Like flexi comp.

As a side note, one of the things I remember about these guys is one of the In/Humanity guys telling me that he thought that the Folk Songs demo was some lost Sleeping Body recordings. I don’t quite see the resemblance, but it was still somewhat flattering since I think Sleeping Body rocks.

If you don’t feel like rocking, and instead want to get into some funky old punk stuff, you can check out the two Profax EPs below. I first heard these guys on the Give Me Back compilation, but it wasn’t for a long time before I actually found the first 7″. Enjoy!
