I thought I’d take a break from my ego-centric rambling and share a little bit about what other people are doing….

Amy's in the news...

Amy’s busy creating her own website, hosted at http://www.tnsms.org. No, it’s not about text messages from your Tamil Nadu mobile phone; it’s an abbreviation for “Tamil Nadu Socioeconomic Mobility Survey.” Just putting the site live ended up getting her a brief interview in the Times of India. (click on the picture to get a larger image.)

Cop: A Novel

And, on the other side of the world, old friend Dan Silver has gone and written a novel (which, from what I can tell, is only available as a Kindle ebook) which I’ve just downloaded, but haven’t read yet. Perhaps I’ll share my views on it later, but I thought it was pretty cool, and from my prior knowledge of Dan, I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

Dan also has a few sites of his own.

On Saturday, Amy and I celebrated the 13-year anniversary of our “first date” by going to Kodaikanal for the day. Pretty fun, but nothing much to report, except for a few silly pictures:

Google Page Creator is gone….

And, they didn’t do such a great job of transferring the Google Page Creator content to Google Sites. So, I’ve decided to delete the content from Google Page Creator and transfer it here instead. This site has so much random content already; four more random articles shouldn’t make too much of a difference.

Disappearing Photos

I was looking through my posts the other day and I just realized that somehow, my Gallery2 installation totally disappeared. What that means, unfortunately, is that there are a whole bunch of old posts (like my 2007 India Vacation posts) which have a whole bunch of broken links.

Browsing through my file manager, I found that all the albums were still there, but the way that Gallery2 dealt out photos hid their actual album location and gave some sort of “fake” link. I tried to reinstall Gallery2, but in the process got a whole bunch of errors, so I thought I would explore the Gallery3.

So, now, all of the photos have been migrated over to Gallery3 (which I think I already like a bit more than Gallery2), and when I have some time to do some boring link-fixing, I guess I will get around to fixing my broken links. In the meantime, if you find any references to photos which show a broken photo placeholder, you can head over to photos.mrdwab.com and see if you can find them there.

Mr Grumpy’s 2009 “How-to-write” calendar

Over the past few weeks, everyone has been going calendar crazy. I mean EVERYONE. I was sitting in meetings with colleagues trying to write “messages” and then find the right pictures to go with the calendar they were making. Amy was asking me how to edit some of her photos so that they would look better when they were printed in the Centre for Microfinance’s calendar. Friends were running out to buy newspapers which had free calendars included with them.

There was so much hype that I just couldn’t resist making a calendar of my own.

For those of you who don’t know what the Grumpy Writer’s Grumps is all about, it’s a place where I’m taking some of the Indian English problems that I am always correcting and making a (hopefully weekly) one-page newsletter telling people (mostly my students at the Tata-Dhan Academy) what kinds of things they should avoid when writing. Not everything will translate to an international audience—many things are definitely localized, in some cases even to Tamil Nadu (and not India overall) but for those of you who have been to India, you might recognize some of the things I write about from time to time.

Anyway, if you want to print this little thing, you can download a different PDF which—when printed double-sided, cut in quarters, correctly arranged, and stapled—will give you a nice pocket-sized version of the calendar above.
