Song Sketches: Coloring Outside the Lines

Front cover for Coloring Outside the LinesAfter years and years and years, I’ve finally gotten around to getting the existing Song Sketches stuff together and compile a somewhat coherent collection of what we were about. To get an idea, you could start by reading the description of the band at the main part of the 2657 Productions site, but there’s always more to a story, right?

So, what took me so long? Part of it was that Song Sketches ended really inconveniently. I know—lame excuse. But it’s somewhat true. Essentially, we stopped playing because I was going to go off to China and teach English for a half year, and when I returned, we all found that we were occupied with different things. And that really was unfortunate, because we still had a handful of songs which hadn’t made their ways out of simply being “sketches” into being more complete recordings.

And then, what to do about a cover? And what order should the songs be in? And are we going to maybe ever get together and record those last few songs—should I wait until then? And…

Well, you get the idea.

Actually, it got so bad that I “misplaced” my MiniDiscs that had all the mastered songs on them at Amy’s mom’s house in Pittsburgh when I was moving back from Massachusetts to California. “No problem,” I thought, “I think I gave a copy to Axle or Shirvan or Kiran or someone.”

Turns out I didn’t. Or at least, so I thought until I remembered that I had given a bunch of unreleased DWAB stuff and other stuff to Ben. A few emails back and forth later, and a couple of reminders, and sure enough, Ben was able to provide me with some mp3s of the stuff I was looking for.

And, I was playing with some crayons the other day (yes, I still do that), and came up with something that I thought could pass for a CD cover. So, seven years later, the rest of you (that being Song Sketches people and Ben) get to hear our music.
