So, as you can see, I’ve fallen behind on my postings of the Indian vacation by a few days. I just haven’t had time to rename, resize, and upload more photos. Part of it is the same old boring story of having a lot of work to do—especially now that CMF is getting ready to release an updated version of their brochure at the same time that we’re trying to get out another edition of the newsletter—but there is a much better reason….
Amy and I got a cat!!!
He’s a cute-yet-vicious black kitten who is either a total spazz or a flopped over lifeless cat. Easily entertained by things like crumpled up drafts of other people’s work that I have had to edit (it feels good for me too, after I’m done editing some of these things, to just crumple it up and throw it in the direction of the cat and watch it play soccer for half-an-hour).
So, what’s the story?
Well, if you refer back to one of the earlier posts about the vacation, you’ll find mention of having dinner at a restaurant called Coconut Lagoon where they brought out a little black kitten.
Well, when the vacation was over, Amy and I went back to have dinner again. I didn’t want to ask about the kitten, because I really wasn’t sure it would still be alive—after all, they did mention the first time around that all of the other kittens had died. But, while we were waiting for the bill, one of the waiters said the kitten was still there and asked if we wanted to see it. We said sure, and a few minutes later, he brought out the kitten who was totally terrified and screaming extremely loudly…. He stayed with us for a while, motionless, but slowly calming down. The owner came by and asked if we wanted to take him.
And who could resist?
Anyway, they wouldn’t let us take him that day—something about the fact that it hadn’t had dinner yet so they couldn’t let us take him. And the next day, when we went to pick him up, they couldn’t find him. Finally two days later, they called us and said in very broken English that they had the cat and could we come right away….
The first night was painful. The kitten yowled all night as it explored the two rooms we had left open for it. It also slunk about with its belly about half-an-inch off the floor and spent lots of time in dark corners.
By the second night, it had decided that Amy and I were fun spring-boards, and it spent most of its second night with us in our bedroom jumping back and forth between Amy and I.
These days, it has taken to sleeping in-between Amy and I throughout the night, but it still attacks anything that moves during the day and in the hours before we go to sleep. It has learned to purr and has developed a liking for tandori chicken. It still needs to learn to retract its claws when it is playing though—Amy and I are totally covered with scratches these days….
Our friend Akhand helped us name him…. We’re calling him Sulu (although we usually call him other things like “Vicious Monster,” “Pretty Kitty,” “The Animal,” or “Spazzy” instead). The name is sort of a nickname for Sultan—very appropriate since he’s sort of been king of the house for the past couple of weeks. I also think it sounds something like “Zulu” and he does remind me of some crazy tribal cat….
Anyway, that’s part of the reason that I haven’t had a chance to upload the last batch of photos. Hopefully, I’ll be able to catch up with the last week or so of stories soon.
And of course, you can count on me putting photos up of the cat at some point too….

Hi Ananda & Amy
It’s exciting you welcomed kitty!
I have a cat in Tokyo. Her name is ‘Misha’. She is living with my younger sister. Misha is 20 years old cat.
Misha says hello to Sulu.
Eriko
Hey Eriko!
Misha is almost as old as my younger brother! That’s pretty impressive….
Sulu’s newest nickname is “Black-blur” since he sometimes moves so quickly that all you see is this black streak zooming through the room….
