So, it has been sort of refreshingly quiet the last few weeks. Mostly, it’s because I’m not in a class at the moment, but that should change by Tuesday. There was some problem processing my financial aid application, so they delayed the start date of my class for a couple of weeks, so this has actually given me a chance to do some stuff for myself and stuff like organizing and uploading lots of photos to my site.
Apparently, my account with iPower should be upgradeable to 200GB of storage (from 50GB) for free, but, since that would require them actually moving my site to a new server, I figure I’ll hold off until I actually need that much space.
But, I have been playing around with a bit of stuff recently. As mentioned a few days ago, I upgraded to the newest version of WordPress, and I’ve been thinking of trying out WordPress Mu to see what that’s all about. Their forum seems pretty cool too, so at some point, that may be another project for me to check out.
The WordPress theme that I used for the CMF website has been upgraded (although not by its original creator) to be a widgetized theme, so that is another potential project for a rainy day (not that I’m expecting any in the next couple of months—you can feel the heat coming as I write this!) since the widgets feature can be useful for things like easily rotating announcements on the site and so on…. The original author was super helpful when I contacted him for permission to use the theme in the first place—I learned a lot about WordPress themes from playing around with his original theme—and the upgrade seems like a good opportunity for me to maybe teach myslef a little bit about widgets and so on….
Gallery2 is pretty cool, though I wish there were a little bit more documentation. One of the cooler features that I finally figured out how to do just today was the addition of a “zip download” option. Basically, with this option, people viewing my photos can click the “add to cart” button when they see a photo that they would like to download. They can go through multiple galleries and do so, then in the end, just download a single zip file with all the photos…. I thought it seemed like a pretty cool option, but for a while, I couldn’t get it to work (I think iPower didn’t have the right zip binary available to me) but eventually found a workaround. I’ve only tried it once, but it seems to be working fine….
Oh, yeah, and if you haven’t noticed, I’ve now started “tagging” my posts too. I hear it’s supposed to help increase visibility, but for me, it’s just another way for me to cross-categorize the stuff I post here…
