Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve checked in here…. A lot has been going on to keep me quite busy. I’ve bought my ticket to India, and I’ve enrolled myself in an online master’s program so that I have something to keep myself busy with when I’m in India.
I also just spent most of last week scanning in about 100 news articles and cleaning them up, and most of the week this week converting them to FlashPaper and embedding them into the web pages. Quite a task…. Describing the repetition that goes into that would make this article qualify for inclusion in the “geekiness” category, so I won’t go there.
One of the other things I’ve been doing on the PSHH website is working on the print stylesheet. The print stylesheet is pretty sweet and works really well with Internet Explorer and mostly well with Opera. Unfortunately, it works really poorly with Firefox, which was the one that I most expected it to work with. Basically, what’s been happening is that if the page is longer than one page, it starts including very random page breaks…. I can’t figure out if it’s trying to place page breaks at headers or what, but it’s pretty messy.
I don’t know how I feel about Firefox. I have been using the Maxthon webbrowser for quite some time now, and I really like it. It seems to be pretty low on resources, has great built in ad and pop-up blocking, a really nice, easily customizable interface, and pretty much does what I expect it to. When I got started in Firefox, I had to download addons and so on just to get something like mouse gestures working. Of course, if you don’t know what mouse gestures are, then you are obviously living in the past…. They make your browsing experience so much more pleasant!
The browser I really like, however, is Opera. Opera has a bunc of cool features that I love—tabbed browsing, built-in email client and so on. Up until recently, you had to pay for it or deal with small, unobtrusive ads. But it’s now free…. The email client is really nice, since it’s really easy to back up a copy of all your email messages and reinstall it later or transfer it to another computer. I’ve used Opera on both Windows and Linux machines, and copied the email backups back and forth, and never had any problems. Ever tried opening your old Outlook Express email backups? Grrr….
So, anyway, that’s what I’ve been doing…. Finishing up work on the Peoples’ Self-Help Housing website and trying to iron out any bugs that I can across the three browsers that I typically use…. Overall, I think the site is pretty cross-browser compatible though, so I’m pretty happy with it.
